THE BORSINGER CHRONIK

CARL THEODOR, born May 10,1853 died Febr.10,1903,son of Karl Joseph and Maria Josepha ,born Heer. He was born 4 month after his father died of Typhoid fever and his mother recuperated from the same illness. He went to public primary and secundary school in Baden and then to the Gymnasium in Schwyz and from there to Neuchatel, after which he started his professional training, being a waiter at the Grangey in Montreux and then to London,England.
At the age of 19 he went as headwaiter to the Seelisberg at the Sonnenhof. His mother arranged a meeting with Elise Hanauer who came from Baden but worked at the Hotel Titlis in Engelberg,Carl had been in love with a girl in Neuchatel, but his mother had different ideas, and the arranged marriage took place at the Church of the Three Kings in Baden, the honeymoon brought them to Milan and the Riviera. Allready Carl together with a gouvernante had taken over the Schoeneck, which, with money from Architect Hanauer (Elises’ brother) was now bought from the Truttmanns. Business was booming In 1877 they allready had their own Kurarzt,Dr.Suter 1879-80 Dr. Kornwal,Militaerarzt with his assistant Dr. Wunderlich who in 1885 became the leading doctor. At that time there was the “original old house” the Saal-building was half finished and the main house had 3 stories and contained the “bath-facilities.” Then they acquired their own well, the path through the gorge was build and the new parc. 1882-83,the well was dammed and an electric power station was built the first mountain Hotel on the lake of Lucerne to have electricity. 1885 landslide, damage to garden, hothouse requiring canalisation of the brook. 1886-87 construction of the New House, and 1891 the Doctors house. All saisons were excellent especially 1889-90 the Schoeneck now could place over 200 guests. In the off saisons the couple made trips to Vienna in 1883 to Belgium in 1886 to Paris in 1889 and Rome in 1981. During the summer they had 10 horses to bring the guests from the boatstation in Beckenried up to the Schoeneck in about 1 hr coachride. the road had to be widened. But then started the disharmony in the marriage and Carl started to drink. He took care of the cellar by himself and his children at times had to guide him to the home in order for the guests not se see him. Carl made the acquaintenance with the Telephon operator Agnes Wirsch from Emmetten and went with her to Weilburg (Germany) Limburg on the Lahn river and then for one summer saison to Guntersau which he bought but then in 1898 sold again. He had left with the full saisons income and the bank account. The year before he also bought the Hotel du Park in Locarno. In Weilburg he apparently had married Agnes and she had a child that soon died and she herself died later, the same year as Carl. In 1898 Carl returned but the Board of directors refused to take him back and he went to Locarno where he started to conduct himsellf well and lived a solid life but began to suffer from “Wassersucht” (Edema-decompensation). In 1900 the Hotel du Park was sold, his daughter Anna who stayed with her father for quiet some time, made the inventory and Carl went to his cousin,Phany Heer in Baden where at the Friedeim he rented a room. He prepaired his breackfirst and supper and for lunch went to the Blume until he came down with pleuresy and was admitted to the Red Cross Hospital in Zuerich, where he had a rib resection (apparently for empyema.) To recover he went to a Mrs.Franzoni in Locarno at the Quisiana. At Christmas he had a liverbleeding, which later repeated and he died there on Febr. 10,1903 His body was brought to the Schoeneck and layed out at the Vestibul. He had a big funeral, many relatives from Baden and Hoteliers around the lake came. He was burried in Emmetten and in 1904 after the family tomb was finished he was layd to rest there.
