THE BORSINGER CHRONIK

JOHANNES JAKOB, Pater Phillip O.S.B Einsiedeln. Son of Joseph Fridolin and Katharina Zimmermann, born March 7,1758 and died June, l9. 1832. Out of the Professbook of the Princely Benedictine Abbey of “Our Blessed Lady” of Einsiedeln, P.Rudolf Henggeler, OSB, writes: P.Phillip (Jakob) Borsinger von Baden had his Profess on Nov.21, and became priest on Sept.15, 1783.Up to Aug.1785 P.Phillip was “Subarchivar”, then he became Katechet(catechist) in the village and instructor for the Converts. At the same time he was exorcist: because on Jan. 1788 he had to go to the monastery of Fahr where they thought sister Walburga Weber to be demonic. On Dec.4, 1789 he became catechist in the “Gross” and afternoon catechist in the village of Einsiedeln. On Oct.6, 1789 he became subpastor, however was moved already on Nov.4,1790 as pastor to St.Gerold where he worked until 1802. He had to be removed from there, because his behavior produced a scandal. In the Archives there is a large correspondence between the Bishop of Constance and the Abbot of Einsiedeln., which I have translated but I would not include here. It should, however, not be doubted on the moral integrity of P.Phillip as well as his thoroughly piet intentions. Back in the Monastery later on he became Ceremoniar and secretary of the “Kapitel”(Chapter), as well as up to March 28,1822 Instructor for the brothers, and after that Infirmar. He died June 18,1831 in his 74 th year of age:”Vir singularis, vir admirabilis, vir revera martyrisatus sine ulla unquam impatienciae verbulo out suspirio”. He endured his pain with great patience. Never could you hear a complaint, never an “ah”or alas or woe! He never wanted to bother the Doctor spite the fact that his legs were rattening away and were full of magets. He had his wounds washed with Holy Water.Only in the last three days he was willing to give in and said to the Doctor:”Now you can treat and do with me what ever you like” and he was ready to take Medicine. For many years he did not drink any wine, only in the few last weeks of his suffering could he be convinced of its merrit and then drank a good portion! He had to suffer a lot during his life because he was a special lover of Exorcism and Benedictions. Tis was the reason for his estrangement with Wessenberg(Bishop of Constance) etc.He was an extremely busy confessor, extremely strict with himself and asketic and as a confessor rather too gentle than strict. Many considered him a saintly man. His portrait hangs in the Archives at the Abbey of Einsiedeln.
