THE BORSINGER CHRONIK

The Blume Line (still 21 st Generation)

ANNA, born 1875 and died July 3,1956. Daughter of Carl Theodor and Elise born Hanauer. She was born at the Schoeneck, her godmother was her grandmother,Franciska Hanauer-Diebold (1823-1898)who also was godmother to Rosly Borsinger. At the age of five she became ill with an infection in her right hip, apparently of TB origin which left her with an atrophy and considerable shortening of the leg and she had to wear a brace and a built up shoe. She had a privat teacher after which she went to St.Anna in Lugano and from there to the Institut Stella Maris in Rorschach and to the Wiedemann’s School for Business in Basel. Returning to the Schoeneck, she worked in the “lingerie”(laundry). In 1900 she was sent to the newly acquired Hotel du Parc in Locarno, where she was in charge of the business. After the death of her father in 1903 and the sale of the hotel she returned to the Schoeneck and took care of her mother together with a nurse and in 1911 they moved to the Belleview, a former “Depandance”, it was there where we grandchildren stayed during our visits. Anna continued to stay at the Belleview after “Amama” death in 1928 until the Schoeneck’s bankruptcy. After the sale of the Schoeneck in 1932 to the Bethlehem Missionaries she moved to a small house in Emmetten, called “Guberli”together with the now aged nurse where she also kept her brother Carl until in 1934 he fell down the cellar stairs and died. In 1936 having exhausted her estate, she moved in with her sister Elise Ackermann and after her death in 1945 with Elise’s daughter Hedwig Wyrsch-Ackermann in Buochs in the apartment upstairs, where in 1952 Jo and I visited with her and where in 1956 she died as I heared of stomach bleeding and obstruction. She was burried in the family grave. From aunt Anna I have an enormous amount of dates and facts of our family history, which I remembered and wrote down.

HEDWIG, born 3/9/1877 and died 1951, daughter of Carl Theodor and Elise born Hanauer. She was born at the Schoeneck where she and Anna had a houseteacher after which she went to St.Anna in Lugano, Stella Maris in Rorschach and Wiedemanns Businesschool in Basel, where she was a “Couleurdame”at the Rauracia student organisation at the Universiy of Basel, and as such met her future husband Dr.med. Joseph Beck from Sursee. Through the family Borsinger-Beck at the Verenahof in Baden the two families were known to each other. The wedding took place at the Schoeneck on June 10,1900,Joseph was 28,Hedwig 23 .Hedwig brought the carved diningroomset into her marriage, which I inherited and shipped to the USA. The young doctor started his praxis in Utzwil,St.Gallen, where he stayed for 5 years, but then moved to Laufenburg on the Rhine-river,where he built up a good praxis and was one of the founders of the Hospital. He became Bezirksarzt (County coroner) Doctor at the Hospital and in the Armee reached the grade of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1941 in his full vigor he celebrated his 70 st birthday Hedwig stood on his side and helped at the office.

His work started out with horsecarriages,he had the earliest Auto’s and ones a motorcycle. I spent,I believe, two vacations there, and with his “Ansaldo”convertible he picked us all up in Lenzburg and brought us up to the Schoeneck to celebrate his Silver Aniversery together with Amama’ 70 st birthday in 1925 In 1945 he closed his praxis and moved to Sursee, where he retired. He gave me part of his library, instruments and some office equippement. He also helped me financially during my studies, giving 1 OOO Fr.anually for 5 years, which I repaid with interest by 1947. Unfortunatly, the first day of his retirement he had an eye-embolism and lost the sight in one eye, but still they enjoyed traveling, went to Corsica,Greece, Egypt, Belgium, Germany etc. Aunt Hedwig had a great pride of her family tradition and told me much of its “glorytime”. In 1943 she came down wit Ca of the breast, had a radical done by Dr. Merke in Basel and did well for almost 8 years. In 1951 she developed lt.pleural effusion, was on Androgen, had thoracocenthesis, developed generalized edema and died. Uncle Joseph in 1947 had a prostatectomy for Ca done in Zuerich.lived for 13 years after. In 1958 we vitited him in Sursee,he was bedritten, and he died Febr.12,1960

KARL JOSEPH ANTON,born 1878 and died 1934, son of Carl Theodor and Elise, born Hanauer after the privat tudering at the Schoeneck he went to the Collegium in Sarnen after which he went for a business apprenticeship to Strassbourg,France and had some further education or training in Rome and Nice. He met Olga Michel at an earlier time but their friendship disolved twice, however, on Oct.14,1907 they got married at the St.Ann’s Chapel by father Pius Suter, a Capucin (Amama was his “geistliche Mutter”spiritual mother) and Carl was made the Director of the Schoeneck. Carl and Olga had 7 girls and finally the eight was a boy. Karl became a judge (Oberrichter) in Emmetten. In the military he was ,like my father, in the cavalry and during W/W/I became an officer and my father took his place as “Fourier”(quartermaster)

The war brought a terrible time for the Hotel-industry and especially for the Schoeneck, Olga”s entire estate of one Million Krone was lost in Austria(which she had inherited from her father) Disharmony, bad management and living above their means, brought the collapse of the Schoeneck.Carl became a severe alcoholic and he was sent, the 3 rd Borsinger, to Ziehlschlacht, where he signed out. Things went from bad to worse, after the bankruptsy Olga went to Baldegg, where her daughters had studied and the sister took her in and where she died of a stroke, she was burried at the “Hofkirche”in Lucerne near her father, and Carl moved in, in Emmetten, with his sister Anna, where he fell down the cellar stairs and died a few days later. He was burried in the family grave in Emmetten. Carl grew up in wealth, enjoyed good living, was an enthusiastic hunter, made big trips for his hoby to Germany and Poland and also visited the Orient, he had a love for his horse, the military, the countryside and the farming, which was done to a certain degree at the Schoeneck. For each of his children he grew a new patch of forest of pine trees (and we have seen them groving!) With all what happened, his wife protected him in front of the children saying: “Do not forgett.your father had a tough yought and a severely strict mother!”

OLGA, born Michel wife of Carl, born 1882 and died 1932. The Michel family origin is in Rorschach on the lake of Constance. Her mother died when Olga was only 13 and from then on she followed her father, wherever he went. Louis Michel 1850 to 1916 was sent from home with 50 Franks to go and look for work. He worked himself up as a merchant and became wealthy and earned quiet some merits. On his business he was traveling a lot,but took his domicile in Lucerne, where he died at the age of 66 from Ca of the rectum and is burried near the Hofkirche in Lucenre. Olga inherited his money but during W.W.I lost over 1 Million Shilling in Austria. Her education was at the Institut Stella Maris in Rorschach. She grew up in wealth and all her life had friends in the upper echalan, like Princess Hildegard of Bavaria, the Geser-Rohns,Textile manufacturers,Mina Schubinger ,furrier in Lucerne (who gave me a 20 Dollar gold coin for my trip and future in the USA), Isabella Kaiser,a poet (she wrote the poem for my brother Max,when he drowned), Anna Richli.a writer and many more.celebrities.Olga was “Mrs. Director, the “directors wife” had a privat tudor for all her children, a dressmaker for the 7 girls who appeared frequently in similar outfits. Olga liked good food and was obese all her life. She was crushed and could not face the downfall of the business. Several of her daughters were educated at the Institut, in Baldegg where the sisters took her in when she had no place to go after the bankruptsy, and there she died shortly after of a stroke. My mother went by train to Baldegg, I missed my breakfirst while I was staying with my sick grandfather and followed by bicycle, when in the church I fainted, my mother looked at me from the side, I was bent over the pew and she thought “Is that the way they pray at the Stella Matutina?” To her burial at the Hofkirche in Lucerne, near her father, we all went by train! Many of Olga’s friends were good to her children, helping for their education and my mother invited the girls for Christmas at the Krone for many years, which almost became their second home.

ELISABETH born Oct.5,1882 and died Jan.6,1945, daughter of Carl and Elise Hanauer. married Ackermann. As her sisters she was educated first by their privat tudor, then at St.Anna in Locarno and Stella Marisis Rorsschach. On Oct.10,1905 she married Eduard Ackermann from the Ennerberg (4/30/1880 - 5/13/1919). Ennerberg is a hill overlooking the present airport of Buochs and the old barock-house has a view over the mountains and plains. This Patrician-house belonged to the Ackermannswho owned a well know cidermill. Eduard was a good husband but not strong enough to stay away from alcohol and died young at the age of 39. Elise had to take care alone of her 5 children and the business. I still remember vividly when in winter on a horseslead my father and I drove by clear ski from Stans to the Ennerberg and I saw the first time a flying star. But they lived above their means and the place went bankrupt. Elise, who since her childhood was overweight, had to move in with her youngest daughter,Hedy Wyrsch in Buochs. She became ill with pneumonia and empyema and had a rib resection and recuperated, but I her last years she became progressively senile
