THE BORSINGER CHRONIK
Notice in “Heim und Leben” (Home & Life) Magazine. The Borsingers belong together with the DORER’s to the oldest families in Baden. Niklaus Borsinger is mentioned in 1515 as citizen of Bremgarten. Ulrich Borsinger settled in Baden as a miller and was made a citizen there in 1549 where he also acquired the Schadenmuehle which for generations stayed in the family possession just like the profession of a miller stayed almost like an inheritance. With Jakob Borsinger in 1603 the family entered the Town Council or Town Board. His grandson, Melchior Borsinger (1599-1665) Medical Doctor reached the towns highest office of a Mayor during troubled times and had the fortification of the town restored and enforced. Joseph Alois Borsinger (1801-1859) was a government official (States Senator) and was involved in the Monastery disturbance (Klosterwirren) when they ceased all the monastery in the Canton Aargau under the Liberals with Augustine Keller and, therefore, had to give in his resignation. With Kaspar-Joseph- Niklaus Borsinger (1778 -1841) who purchased the BLUME, a dynasty in the Hotel business was started and his offspring’s entered into the possession of the VERENAHOF and LIMMATHOF. In the Coat of Arms the Borsinger carry a red antler on a white shield. It should be mentioned also, that the family tradition, according to which the family originates from patricians or even Nobles, is a fable.
Excerpts from the book of the COATS of ARMS of the town of Baden: With the DORERS the Borsingers are the oldest Patrician-families of the old earldom (Grafschaft) of Baden. The uninterrupted continuation of the family starts with a Borsinger, who in 1497 married Maria Margaretha von Baden. Maria Margaretha was the last descendant of her family and, consequently, their offspring’s called themselves Borsinger von Baden. The family of the “von Baden” was one of the oldest of the town and their ancestral seat was the “Niedere Veste” (lower fort or castle) which later became the Governors Mansion.(and today is a museum). The origin of the family Borsinger is very difficult to document because due to the eventful fate of Baden the archives have suffered considerably. It is the similarity of the coat of arms as well as the appearance shortly after the expulsion out of Italy and the sudden appearance of the name in the towns regiment without forgoing notice in the towns registry or other documents which brings up the presumption that the name Borsinger, also Borsingher, Borsingheri and Borsing as documented, could be identical with Bersingheri, the name of the exiled Orso Beringer, als Orso Beringheri. Orso Beringer was the youngest of the three brothers of an old Florentine patrician family, which, after unsuccessful rebellion against the new regime of the Medici”s in the year 1478 was expelled from their homeland. Presumably the youngest son traveled across the Alps, the two older ones became the originators of the families Berenger in France. We can find Ulrich Borsinger, son of Maria Margareta, in the year l542 in the tows council. - So far from an Anonymus of the Swiss family book IV (1913) page 775 -characteristic for this publication about the beginning of the family names. The following explanation will proof, that this representation is completely flimsy. |
